The Last Airbender apparently follows a year after Avatar but it is being directed by a different person and has a completely different cast. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I don’t watch the series and seeing as they are the same series, why are the movies so different?

Don’t take me for an idiot, because I know the series already ended, thus being a series finale. But, I read on IMDB that Nickelodeon has announced three, original, animated Avatar movies, in addition to the live-action trilogy that will be produced. So will there be more?
