Now yesterday I was messing around in my router properties trying to make it work, and I set the network adress translation (NAT) onto the Xbox’s IP, (I usually use Network Port forwarding) and hooray it worked! I downloaded the update and started making my account, but as that happened late at night I thought I would carry on tommorow.
Now I try it with the EXACT same settings, and it doesnt work at all! I took it back to the store and it worked fine for them. Could anyone please tell me whats going on?
Hey teknoKid, thanks very much for your answer!
hehe actually i’m aware it changes addresses, because it is currently on automatic, first I plug my computer in and check its ip, then I plug the xbox in and it just assigns the next ip number up, from my computer (10.0.0.1, 10.0.0.2 ect..) just in case, i check the details screen on the xbox and that tells me for sure.
heh well im not too sure what you mean by Universal plug and play, on my gateway security configuration screen it has 3 options, 1. Dont use network translation (doesnt connect to the net at all for some reason)
2. Use NAT (select the ip you want to connect to the net)
3. Use NAPT (port by-pass, doesnt seem to work for the xbox)
Ill try check www.portforward.com (or whatever it is) and see if i can open up some ports on the router for xbox-live. Im looking forward to your reply!
Yep, with your help I have found the DMZ option on my router, Ive tried it to no avail, so yes I probably have to have a static IP on my xbox (out of interest, what does this do? Does it just skip past port forwarding, or is it another version of NAT?)
i am currently in the process of trying Upnp, i will post back with results and hopefully we’ll fix the problem
Again, sorry for making you wait a day for a reply
Hey, guess what, I found the UpnP and it WORKED! Hooray!
I guess the router wasnt discovering the xbox properly or something, but in that case I dont know how the DNS test passed? Maybe it was just blocking the ports specifically for Xbox live.
Well anyway thankyou VERY much for your help, I dont think ive ever had such a detailed answer before lol.
And I appreciate you finding the links for me as well! Out of interest, do you work in the computer industry? You seem to know a lot about networking.
